Playing Role

Batting Allrounder

From a bowler who sometimes batted at No. 11, Sophie Devine developed into one of the leading allrounders and most destructive batters in the game. In early 2020 she became the first player, male or female, to score five consecutive T20I fifty-plus scores - a run she extended to six in a row at the beginning of the 2020 T20 World Cup in which she also captained New Zealand.

There were glimpses of what she was capable of with the bat during the first phase of her international career, particularly in T20Is, and she came within a shot of securing a Super Over in the 2010 T20 World Cup final when a fierce straight drive slammed into Ellyse Perry's foot to give Australia the title.

Devine did not play an ODI between July 2010 and February 2013 but it was on her return in the World Cup that things started to take off when she struck an imperious 145 against South Africa in New Zealand's opening match. It would be four years until her next ODI hundred, against Pakistan in 2017, and she went on to make four in 10 innings.

In T20Is it was a promotion to open the batting in 2017 that saw her game go to another level and brought the world-record run of scores that included a maiden century against South Africa. In mid-2020 she was named New Zealand captain on a permanent basis having stepped in when Amy Satterthwaite took leave to have her first child.

On the domestic scene she was a prolific all-rounder performer for the Adelaide Strikers in the WBBL before switching to the Perth Scorchers.

Earlier in her career, Devine also represented New Zealand at hockey.
