Pakistan vs England, 1st Test at Multan, PAK vs ENG, Oct 07 2024 - Match Result

12.10pm That's pretty much a wrap from this first Test. A truly remarkable England win, their fourth in a row in Pakistan, and one that rivals even Rawalpindi from two years ago for shock and awe. How do Pakistan bounce back from that? There've got barely four days to regroup and go again. From Miller, Alan, Venkat and the team, adieu!

Time for some presentations. Harry Brook and Joe Root scoop various sponsors awards, as does Jack Leach for his bowling. But it is Brook who is the official Player of the Match, as you'd expect, for his extraordinary 317.

Brook: "Obviously enjoyed it a lot, tough with the heat, good to be out there with Rooty. We were just batting for as long as possible, set the plan out at lunch. Enjoy batting, build a partnership, rotate the strike, take fluid on board. Tough, but a good surface to cash in on. Hopefully many more to come."

Shan Masood: "We've spoken about the third innings, but it's a team game, when you put 550 on the board it's important to back it up with 10 wickets, and that's what we didn't do. That's the key, how can the batting and bowling in first innings contribute to a lead. The onus is to set the game up well and finish it off. We should learn from England, they found ways to take 20 wickets. That's the challenge the side has going forward. We're in the middle of the series, we've talked about a squad mentality. Test cricket is the ultimate format, the best teams find a way. Scoring runs and taking wickets are the non-negotiables."

"We love playing the game, we're hurt by the results, we're hurt as a nation, but a quick turnaround. We're not getting the results that Pakistan cricket deserves. We have to get this right as a squad."

Ollie Pope: "The fitness the bowlers showed, and Brook and Root, credit to them for the skills and determination to put the team in a winning position. When you come out to bat again and you're 260 runs behind and the pitch is three days older, it's never easy. Got the odd ball to reverse and spin. Even if they'd made 400 we've have backed ourselves for a small chase. Brydon on debut was awesome, charged in with a lot of heart, and the way Jack Leach bowled, coming back into the side, fits right in and taken crucial wickets. I smoked a pull shot straight to midwicket but it's a team game, and we're on the right side of the performance!

11.53am Brydon Carse is speaking to Sky Sports. "The lads are buzzing upstairs. A great, great result. All the guys ... Rooty, Brookie, all the seamers, they really put in a massive effort over the last five days, and it feels very rewarding. There's two ice-baths in the back with massive chunks of ice in them. Still trying to figure out if they help or if it's a bit of humour for the lads to get in them. Up there with the most difficult conditions I've played in."

11.45am Sampath tells us that this is only England's second innings win in Asia, and the first since 1976! That's incredible, and tells you an awful lot about how these high-scoring contests usually pan out... draw, or England drubbing is the usual drill!

Matt Roller notes that Leach has now won 11 of his 14 Tests in Asia. That is every bit as remarkable! Obviously he was injured when things went south in India earlier this year, not that his absence was necessarily the decisive factor ... but with seven wickets in the match, that's a very telling return to the XI

11.37am Handshakes all round as Pakistan troop onto the field to greet the victors. England were made to work for their initial breakthrough this morning, but the damage had already been done on day four, first with the sheer weight of England's batting, through Harry Brook and Joe Root, and then with the determined bowling onslaught. Brydon Carse, not on the field at the moment of victory, was magnificent on debut, bowling himself to a standstill in the end. While Leach served a timely reminder that his experience still has a role, despite the younger Bashir being the coming man.

Ramapriya: "In the McCullum era, each time the opposition has scored 500 in the first innings, England has won. Remarkable!"

Remember, Abrar will not bat, poor chap is still in hospital.

smug: "The pitch is still benign. The pak top order really squandered this, didn't they? It was probably about just seeing out the 20 odd overs yesterday instead of whatever adventurism they did. " They were utterly frazzled by England's batting yesterday. A night's sleep has helped, but you sense it's come too late...

Curious innings. Pakistan could have been 12 down by now... on a road.
