The Dubai demolition job is complete! South Africa have rocked up to this T20 World Cup and at the first time of asking, shown they mean business! Floated up full outside off. Wolvaardt eases it enough to mid off's left and canters across to the other end, symbolizing how this chase has been. Done at a canter, done without breaking into a sweat, and done with the clinical edge that proves South Africa will have a major say at this T20 World Cup!
WI Women vs SA Women, 3rd Match, Group B at Dubai, Women's T20 World Cup, Oct 04 2024 - Match Result
SA Women won by 10 wickets (with 13 balls remaining)
5:15pm That will be all from us for this game. The action, though, hardly stops. India are gearing up to take on New Zealand in about 45 minutes' time and you can catch all that happens here. Until next time, this is goodbye from Ranjith and myself. Take care, folks!
Laura Wolvaardt, South Africa captain: (On the conditions) Not that easy. One of the harder knocks I have had physically, especially after fielding first. (On if she has to keep a better eye on the over-rate) Definitely. Not ideal. Had to slip in quite a bit of spin after the first half. (On the team's performance) It was pretty excellent overall. The way Kappie started and then to have Mlaba take four wickets, it is amazing. Then to win with ten wickets in the shed, that is amazing as well.
Hayley Matthews, West Indies captain: It was a very disappointing game and not the way we wanted to start. We have to pick ourselves up quickly. We have a game in two days' time and we have to bounce back quickly. (On their batting) We were able to build some partnerships in between but probably not able to strike the way we wanted to. (On if the players who picked up injuries will be fit for their next game) Hopefully. She (James) got hit on the face and hopefully that is just a cut (and she can feature on Sunday).
Here's Sampath, putting into perspective the enormity of South Africa's win: This is the fifth instance of a team winning by a 10-wicket margin in the women's T20 World Cup. The 119-run chase is the highest target chased among the five. South Africa are the first team with two 10-wicket wins.
Nonkululeko Mlaba, Player of the Match: Very special for me, I love playing and representing my people back in South Africa. (Key to her success) For me, it was about sticking to the stumps. That worked really well for me today. Really grateful for the support from my mates. I am so happy for them (our openers).
5:02pm An utterly one-sided contest. SA's bowlers set it up and their opening pair did the rest. Wolvaardt blazed away early, establishing a nice tempo and putting the bowlers under pressure. Brits grew into her innings as the middle overs dawned, and the pair registered the highest-ever partnership against the West Indies in the Women's T20 World Cup.
The best thing that came out of that second innings, from a West Indies POV, was that they dragged the game till the 18th over. They lacked penetration and it often seemed too easy for the South African batters, especially once they had taken stock of Matthews. Lots to ponder for the West Indies and even though they will want to cast this aside as a blip, they will need much more to make a mark at this tournament.
